Parents wishing to enrol their children need to do so by making an appointment via the School Receptionist, who then advises the Principal. The parents will then be rung to confirm a time and date. All enrolments are overseen and completed by the Principal. Year 1 students then have a very detailed Induction Programme they follow (see New Entrant Booklet). It is important that any books that the children have from previous schools are brought with them. New Entrant children are encouraged to start school on the first or sixth week (on a Monday) of each term, after their fifth birthday. Year 2-6 New Entrants start school the Monday after enrolment once a class placement has been made and the new teacher advised. The teacher will be available to greet the new student and meet the parents in the morning. We do not take enrolments on the spot with children starting immediately as we want to ensure all enrolments are done so effectively, with as easy a transition as possible.
Parents of children who are leaving are asked to notify the school office a few days beforehand. When they leave children are to take all books and stationery belonging to them, and teachers to have pursued any outstanding School Library Books to be returned.
· Parents of new students make an appointment to complete their enrolment. This will be arranged at the first point of contact with reception. A school tour with House Captains will also be arranged at this time if requested.
· Parents will need to bring with them, a copy of the child’s latest report or equivalent and in the case of an international student – a copy of the ESOL enrolment form, passport and visa.
· Evidence of their permanent place of residency is required. This needs to be a power or phone bill, rates demand or home ownership/rent proof. Bank statements are not sufficient.
· All international students and their guardians must meet with the Principal prior to enrolment. For ‘short term’ students at the school, their period of intended study should also be ascertained at this meeting. Proof of residency, passport and immigration data needs to be provided at this meeting also. International students also must live in zone.
· Once the information listed above has been seen and verified, the information pertaining to Learning and Teaching will be sent by the office staff to the class teacher.
· Other enrolment information will be sent to the class teacher before Monday to let them know that the new student is arriving.
· All Year 2-6 students will start at Gladstone Primary School on the Monday following their enrolment being accepted. New Entrant students start on the Monday of week 1 or 6 following their enrolment being accepted. This acceptance may be either verbal or written from the office.
· Before their arrival, a provisional placement will be done by the Principal and the new Teacher advised.
· On the first day, the Principal and the new class teacher will meet the child. It is important a buddy is appointed to manage this process for the student. In the case of International Students, this buddy should be able to speak the new student’s language if possible.
· In the case of ESOL students, they will be tested where appropriate. The Director of Guidance and Support will also assess them on the ESOL MOE tests. Results for these tests will be distributed to class teachers.
Over the past few years we have been revising and improving the processes to transition children from Early Childhood Centres into New Entrant Classes and due to the large numbers of new entrant students coming to our school it has been decided that we will follow the lead of some other local schools and limit the intake dates to the first and sixth Mondays of each term. This will mean that students will attend visits to school as a class group and will all have the same experiences. This will also better facilitate parents being able to get to know each other as a class group during these visits. In New Zealand students are not required to start school until their sixth birthday and are fully funded in Early Childhood Centres until that date. For some children this will mean that they start school up to five weeks after their fifth birthday. Discussion with schools that already implement this system for transition indicate that parents report that the advantages outweigh the problems associated with the short wait. Parents, of course, are entitled to send their child to school on their fifth birthday but we encourage parents to support this process as it facilitates a more effective and settled start to school for all new entrants If you have any questions or wish to make an enrolment please do not hesitate to contact the office.

New Entrant Classification
|
Children who start school before the first of July are classified as Year 1 children. These children spend up to 12 months in Year 1. Those children who start after the 1st of July are classified as Year 0 or New Entrant children and may spend up to 18 months in Year 1. These are the Ministry of Education Guidelines and the school is funded according to the age of the children, at the 1st of July each year, not their year classification. Children are no longer "kept back" or "pushed forward". Gladstone Primary School proactive in the preparation of classes for children and will ensure that children are provided developmentally appropriate education no matter what their level.
